Collection: Pandora's Hope

Here we have Pandora, giving humanity the final blessing given to her by the gods: Hope.

There’s different versions of the Pandora’s box myth, but among most the same theme: Pandora represented the first woman to the Greeks.

Many gods in the pantheon gave her a gift (leading to one of the translations of her name to be “she who sends up gifts”), but as a punishment for Prometheus stealing Zeus’ fire, the ever tricky Zeus sent her a box (or rather, a jar) full of woe and hope.

Like with all of the myths, the translations are as tricky as Zeus himself, and I read them with the knowledge that the time period in which they were written down from oral tradition was ripe with misogyny and a general lack of consideration for women being equal humans.

In this illustration, which took me about 6 hours to create, I envision the jar (or box) as a metaphor for Pandora’s heart, and she is pouring the hope from her heart container onto America — another divine lady desperately in need of a bit of hope.

As hope spreads across the land, the color comes back into view.
